Architecture Delft University of Technology (2023)
Carmen is a designer whose work considers architecture and design as a medium through which cultural narratives, collective imaginaries, and forms of social life are produced and made perceptible. She is concerned with the reciprocal relationship between space and its participants: how architecture registers cultural, political, and ecological conditions, while simultaneously shaping individual perception, emotion, behaviour, memory and relations. She is interested in the interplay between these macro- and microcosms, and in how the personal and the collective continually inform one another through space. The focus here lying on the relationship between the embodied experience of the individual and the larger cultural, social, and ecological systems in which it is situated, expressing understandings between mind, body and space.
Moving between the intimate scale of individual experience and the broader structures of society, her work examines the narratives embedded in the spaces we inhabit and the ways these narratives contribute to our understanding of reality, and how the ways in which we perceive and construct that reality, in turn, affect the ecosystems we inhabit. She is particularly interested in the emotional and psychological dimensions of architecture, as well as in the cultural meanings and systems that accumulate within built environments over time.
She moves between architecture, art, research, and writing, informed by interests in philosophy, psychology, ecology, minimalism, literature, and socio-political thought. She is currently working towards architectural licensure.
